Signs and symptoms of polycystic
ovary syndrome
1. Menstrual disorders: SOP mainly produces oligomenorrhea (few menstrual periods) or amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods), but you can also have other types of menstrual disorders.
2. Infertility: In general, this result directly from chronic anovulation (lack of ovulation).
3. High levels of masculinizing hormones: The most common signs are acne and hirsutism (male pattern hair growth), but can produce hypermenorrhea (very frequent menstrual periods) or other symptoms. Approximately three quarters of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (by the diagnostic criteria of the NIH / NICHD 1990) have evidence of hyperandrogenemia.
4. The Metabolic Syndrome: This shows a tendency to central obesity and other symptoms associated with insulin resistance.
